About me
If you´re somehow curious about who is behind all of this, here you are:
My name is Alvaro Matiz Rodriguez and I´m 35 years old. I´m currently living in the north of Spain, and until some weeks ago, I used to work as CIO for a multinational company in the automotive business. I´ve been around in the IT industry for almost 20 years, wearing almost all its hats: programmer, support technician, teacher, supervisor… Right now, I´m enjoying a sabbatical time, mainly devoted to think, travel and write.
I went to college to study Industrial Engineering and Economic Science in Bogota. In the meantime, I was enrolled in Computer Science but I dropped out after a short time since all the things they teached were miles away from the “real world” experience I already had.
I began to work in IT when I was 15, first as teacher and then as freelance technician (And no, I won´t fix your computer for free…). While I was in college I founded a t-shirt printing company that wasn´t a big success but allowed me to make some money, know a lot of people and learn about some different things apart from computers. I used to be an english teacher (I love this language!) and I also started a Technology Consultancy firm back in Colombia. I worked in Banking and Insurance business as well.
In 2000 I decided to overhaul my entire life and moved to Europe. Since then, I´ve been working in IT all the time, starting as an Internet Cafe admin, until my current position.
I always loved to travel, and luckily my father´s job allowed my family and myself to fulfill that wish. As of today, I´ve been in three continents and I travel as much as I can. My next dream destination is Asia, specially Japan, a country that I always wanted to visit. I like Germany and France a lot, but my favorite european destination is London.
But I´m not a pure techno geek. There are some other things that are fun and almost electricity-free: I´m a buddhist wannabe, bike maniac, Silva Method practitioner, Pilates enthusiast (and, for a brief time, teacher), kite and model-plane pilot, long time reader, amateur writer and meditator, not-so-good electronic musician, videogame addict, cacti farmer, tireless traveler, vegetarian beginner, multilingual speaker and passionate music lover.
